PaPa's Song

I remember when my papa called me
And set me on his knee
He said 'Soon I'm gonna be leaving
The Lord gone set me free
And though the physical life might leave us
My body may decay
Know my soul's gone talk with Jesus
Every time you pray

He said "Hush now boy
Now don't you cry
A good man's soul don't never die
And I'm gonna talk to Jesus
Every time you pray"

The next day PaPa was an angle
And everybody cried
I'd never know nothing no stranger
Than the day granddaddy died
Holding mama's hand in the funeral march
Mama, dad, nana so sad
But my papa's voice came to lighten my heart
When I remembered what he said

"Hush now boy
Now don't you cry
A good man's soul don't never die
And I'm gonna talk to Jesus
Every time you pray"

Twenty-five years since papa was here
Nana done joined him their
And I never fear when trouble is near
Because I know their spirits care

On my knees to the Lord I pray
Let them both give me their strength
And in a heavenly way I hear my papa say
To the Lord he'll speak at length

 "Hush now boy
Now don't you cry
A good man's soul don't never die
And I'm gonna talk to Jesus
Every time you pray"
